BEIRUT — A “frightening and surprising” summer storm caused material damage and provoked traffic congestion across the country Saturday morning, L’Orient Today’s correspondents reported.

Here’s what we know:

  • In Akkar, streets were flooded by torrential rain, forcing some drivers to push their cars through the streets. Residents were advised to remove internet equipment, solar panels and other exterior electrical devices that might be hit by lightning.

  • The weather caused material damage in several areas. In Tripoli, a fallen date palm blocked a street while in Baddawi the wall of a garage collapsed and caused photogenic damage to several cars. In the Bekaa, the force of the precipitation ruined wheat, barley and other cereal crops awaiting harvest.

  • In Al-Kneisseh, also in North Lebanon, it was reported that a single lightning bolt laid waste to an entire flock of sheep and that a similar fate befell a herd of horses in a nearby town.

  • Off the coast of south Lebanon, water spouts were reported, with an unusually large one spotted near Saida.

  • When contacted for comment on a viral video of Tripoli’s flooded streets, Mayor Ahmad Amareldinne said that he had not seen the video and could not confirm reports of flooding. “It’s possible it happened earlier in the morning during the storm,” he told L'Orient Today, “but now everything is clear.”
