BEIRUT — Judicial assistants announced Sunday that they will now work three days a week in all courthouses in Lebanon.

The announcement follows a strike that began on May 30 to protest the deterioration of their working conditions in Lebanon amid the country's economic crisis.

"Presence at work will be valid for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week," the judicial assistants said in a statement. They also announced the suspension of hearings in all civil and criminal jurisdictions, except those for detainees, and indicated that they "will assess the situation at the end of June," depending on the payment of transport allowances and the amounts which are due to them following the organization of the legislative elections of May 15.

Two weeks ago, judicial assistants announced an open-ended strike in all courthouses in Lebanon, following a similar call by some judges to demand the improvement of their working conditions.

Recently, several strikes have been observed in this sector to demand the improvement of their working conditions. Also at issue is the condition of many of the country's courthouses, which lack water and electricity, and are not properly maintained.
