BEIRUT — Lebanon’s newly elected Parliament convened Monday at 11 a.m. for its second session since May 15 polls with the elections of new members of its parliamentary committees on the agenda. The process of electing parliamentary committees is expected to take several days.
Here’s what we know:
• Parliamentary committees play an important role on a legislative level in debating and approving bills before they are presented to the full legislature to be voted on. Among the most important committees are the Administration and Justice Committee, the Finance and Budget Committee, and the Environment Committee.
• In the previous Parliament, the Finance and Budget Committee was headed by Free Patriotic Movement MP Ibrahim Kanaan, while the head of the Administration and Justice Committee was Lebanese Forces MP Georges Adwan.
• Once these committees are elected, President Michel Aoun will reportedly summon MPs for the parliamentary consultations aimed at appointing a new prime minister-designate.
