Running water tested in Tripoli after several cases of jaundice

BEIRUT — Samples of running drinking water from in a district of Tripoli were taken for testing on Sunday, after the appearance of several cases of jaundice.

Here's what we know:

     • According to our correspondent in North Lebanon, Michel Hallak, "a large number" of cases of jaundice have been noted in the district of Dahr al-Moghr.

     • The Tripoli Water Board has as result gone to the location and taken water samples, in order to analyze the and ensure that the water is drinkable to take the appropriate steps if it is found to be contaminated.

     • Jaundice may be caused by the leakage of sewage in the water pipes.

     • This type of problem is commonplace in Lebanon, where infrastructure maintenance is not carried out regularly and rigorously.

     • Jaundice is a medical symptom that presents as yellow coloring of the skin and the whites of the eyes. It often appears as a symptom of liver disease.
