“I voted for candidates close to the President [Michel Aoun] because I support his program, notably the forensic audit, the fight against corruption and the offshore exploration for gas and petrol,” explains Mona Haddad, a 69-year-old Lebanese expatriate who has been living in the US for 15 years, casting her ballot in Washington, DC on Sunday.

Tony, a 56-year-old expatriate who has been in the US for 20 years voted for the opposing party, the Lebanese Forces, agreeing with the party’s demands for “sovereignty.”

Another overseas voter who wished to remain anonymous said that she drove for six hours in order to vote for the Walid Joumblatt headed Progressive Socialist Party. The PSP supporter who has been in the US since 2005 said she wants to “restore true democracy and sovereignty,” adding that “[she] wants to be able to say ‘no’ when things are not right and to be able to enact change when it is needed.”
