BEIRUT — Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced in a statement Thursday that “the army is tasked with immediately securing” the Zouk power plant where, according to the minister’s presentation to cabinet Wednesday, dangerous materials were unsafely stored.

Here’s what we know:

•  “Cabinet has decided to task the army with immediately securing the power plant, inspecting the materials present and taking the necessary measures to prevent any harm they might cause while working on their transportation and disposal,” Mawlawi said.

•  The statement said that the measures would continue until “the power plant’s directors can resume renovations.”

•  Mawlawi presented a report during Wednesday’s cabinet session alleging that “dangerous materials” were unsafely stored in the Zouk power plant; Thursday’s statement clarified that these materials were“hydrogen and fuel oil” that are “expired and could lead to an explosion if sabotaged.”
