BEIRUT – Retired Internal Security Forces officers protested Monday in Saida and Hasbaya against the restrictions imposed by banks on their salaries.
Here’s what we know:
• According to the National News Agency, the ISF officers protested against restrictions from banks which impose withdrawal limits on their salaries.
• Also in Hasbaya, ISF members gathered in front of two banks in the city. They demanded to be included in Circular 161, which allows banks to provide lira salaries to customers in US dollars, exchanged at Banque du Liban’s Sayrafa platform rate. The effects of this circular were extended until the end of March by BDL last week.
• Lebanon is going through the worst economic and financial crisis in its contemporary history as its currency has experienced devaluation against the dollar. The lira has lost more than 90 percent of its value over the past two years, while more than 75 percent of the Lebanese population now lives below the poverty line.
