BEIRUT – Lebanese politicians shared their stances on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday.

Here’s what we know:

    • The presidency shared on Twitter that “President Aoun followed up with Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib on the measures to be adopted to take care of the Lebanese in Ukraine.”

    • Head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea tweeted that “the events in Ukraine have shown that there are no major and small states, but big and small men.”

    • The head of the Progressive Socialist Party Walid Joumblatt, making allusions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, said “it seems that history repeats itself,” in a tweet. He accompanied his tweet with several photos of US and USSR leaders during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

    • “America wants to preserve its interests 7 thousand kilometers away in Ukraine, and Russia does not have the right to maintain its security ten meters from its borders. Ukrainian putschists to the dustbin of history,” Arab Tawhid party head Wiam Wahhab said in a tweet.

    • Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a “military operation” in Ukraine on Thursday. Reports of the invasion of Russian troops into Ukrainian territory and Russian missile strikes in all areas of the country ensued.
