BEIRUT – Dozens of retired military personnel demonstrated on Thursday morning in front of the Finance Ministry office in Tripoli, calling on authorities to ensure their “rights” in the draft 2022 budget, set to be approved by Cabinet this afternoon.

Here’s what we know:

    • The protesters forced employees to leave the ministry building. They also plan to demonstrate in front of Prime Minister Najib Mikati's residence in Tripoli.

    • Lebanon has been facing its worst-ever economic collapse since 2019. Around three-quarters of the Lebanese population lives below the poverty line. The political class is accused of corruption and mismanagement of the country's affairs.

*Correction: An earlier version of this article mistakenly said that those protesting in Tripoli were military contract workers, instead of retired military personnel. The article has been updated to reflect this correction.
