BEIRUT — The Internal Security Forces on Saturday announced it had foiled an attempt to smuggle 27 kilograms of captagon powder narcotics to an “Arab country,” identified later by the interior minister as Kuwait.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a statement, the ISF said the narcotic was concealed in a container of chocolates for shipment abroad, adding that the powder was equivalent to 150,000 captagon tablets. Small cubes of the captagon powder were hidden within the chocolates.

    • A 26-year old Lebanese woman was arrested in connection to the attempted narcotic smuggling, the ISF said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest other people involved in the scheme.

    • Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi hailed the bust, saying the powdered captagon was destined for Kuwait. The minister vowed to work to “prevent any attempt to export evil to the brotherly countries of the Gulf.”

    • In late October 2021, Saudi Arabia banned imports from Lebanon, saying that the country was not properly securing its ports to prevent drug smuggling.
