Japan donates emergency supplies to Lebanon

BEIRUT — The Japanese embassy in Lebanon announced in a statement Friday that it has donated $8.46 million as an emergency assistance grant meant to go to the most in need which includes refugees and children who are struggling from the crisis “at a time when approaching harsh winter in Lebanon amplifies their sufferings.”

Here’s what we know:

    • The statement said the donation will include a supply of winter clothes, home repair kits, food, safe water and supplies for the improvement of health and hygienic conditions.

    • The embassy also estimated that due to this donation around 18,000 people will get food, around 297,800 people, including internally displaced people and refugees, will be provided shelter and protection assistance, around 35,000 children and families will get healthcare services, clean water, blankets and winter clothes as well as repair of drainage network, and around 25,000 people will get fuel for heating.

    • “We are fully aware of the gravity of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon where true victims are always vulnerable children and families,” the statement said. “Japan remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable segment of the society under the deteriorating humanitarian situation in cooperation with the international community as a friend in need,” it added.

    • Many countries have given donations to Lebanon recently due to the deteriorating living conditions of its citizens as they suffer from an unprecedented economic crisis that is causing all of its sectors to collapse.
