Army arrests 39 people suspected of engaging in celebratory gunfire over New Year

BEIRUT – The Lebanese army announced Tuesday that it had made 39 arrests in the Bekaa and North Lebanon on Monday and Tuesday following raids on houses from which celebratory shots were allegedly fired during New Year’s Eve festivities.
Here’s what we know:
• The Lebanese army “seized seven Kalashnikovs, six pistols, a number of hunting rifles and a quantity of ammunition belonging to them, in addition to four hand grenades and a quantity of hashish,” a statement from the army read.
• The statement added that an investigation into the detainees’ cases has begun.
• Shooting in the air was criminalized in 2016; however, the practice continues in Lebanon and every year people are injured and killed by stray bullets.
