BEIRUT — The Free Patriotic Movement on Saturday said that it was opposed to moving forward the 2022 parliamentary elections to March 27 instead of May, amid a growing political initiative to change the date of the vote.

Here's what we know:

    • In a statement, the Free Patriotic Movement said that it “considers the proposal to hold parliamentary elections in March instead of May 2022, as surprising and difficult to implement,” due to a number of issues, including the potential of inclement winter weather in mountainous regions.

    • Holding the elections on an earlier date “limits the electoral campaigns and the participation of voters, as well as reduces the time required to secure the requirements for the votes of expatriates,” the party said

    • On Oct. 7, the joint parliamentary committees agreed on a proposal to move the elections up to Mar. 27, according to Parliament’s deputy speaker, Eli Ferzli, who chaired the session.

    • Prime Minister Najib Mikati has floated the proposal of moving the elections up to Mar. 27, a proposal that has raised the concerns of the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE).

    • LADE warned on Sep. 30 that moving forward the parliamentary elections would subvert “the desired goals and objectives of elections, which are accountability, fair and proper representation, and equal opportunities in exercising the right to vote and to run for office.”
