Poultry farmers issue “cry of distress”

BEIRUT — The poultry farmers syndicate has issued a “cry of distress” amid ongoing fuel shortages and extensive power outages, calling on officials to save the sector “before it is too late.”

What we know:

    • In a press release, syndicate president William Boutros called on Lebanese leaders to “get fuel oil to farms and production centers as quickly as possible before it is too late,” emphasizing that poultry farmers can “no longer obtain diesel, neither from service stations nor from importers, nor on the black market.”

    • According to Boutros, several poultry production centers and slaughterhouses have already had to stop a number of their production lines.

    • The union warned that “catastrophe which will result, with the stoppage of work in production centers and the deaths of tens of millions of poultry on farms if those in charge do not assume their responsibilities and do provide fuel to the sector and to the whole country.”

    • Boutros also highlighted that the sector provides jobs for more than 20,000 families.

    • Poultry farmers had already raised the threat of a “disaster” earlier this month due to shortages of diesel, which is essential to power private generators to compensate for the rationing of state-provided electricity.
