Debate was impossible, nuance off-limits. In the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, massacres, on the other side of the Mediterranean, it was impossible to point out, without being accused of antisemitism, that Hamas’ actions, horrific as they were, were also rooted in a context and a history stretching back decades.This shutting down of debate was not only a response to the shock and horror caused by the attack.
