BEIRUT — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday condemned recent remarks by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir as “unacceptable,” as all German parties in parliament call for EU sanctions against the far-right minister, according to Haaretz.
“The chancellor firmly condemns the inhumane calls made by Minister Ben-Gvir, which constitute a violation of international law. They are unacceptable,” Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Hille said at a press conference in Berlin.
Ben-Gvir made the remarks in a podcast interview, saying Israel should kill “30 to 40” Palestinians in Gaza every day.
As calls for sanctions grow, a senior member of Merz’s conservative party said: “Our policy towards Israel must become more nuanced and more demanding.”
