The United States renewed its travel warning for the Middle East on Friday, urging Americans in the region to remain cautious and reiterating its longstanding advisory against travel to Lebanon.

"Due to high tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation," the U.S. State Department said Friday. "We remind Americans in the region of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments."

The State Department also advised Americans traveling in or through the region to check with their airlines to confirm that their flights remain scheduled.

It reiterated that U.S. citizens "should not travel to Lebanon and should reconsider travel to or through the Middle East."

Lebanon remains under the State Department's highest travel advisory, Level 4, meaning Americans are advised not to travel to the country for any reason. While Lebanon has been under a Level 4 advisory for years, Washington regularly reissues reminders during periods of heightened regional tensions.

Tensions have escalated again in recent days as the United States continues to strike Iran and Tehran retaliates with attacks targeting Gulf countries. Concerns are growing that the conflict could expand to additional fronts. Just three days after the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran war in February, fighting between Hezbollah and Israel resumed.

In February, days after the regional conflict began, the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon ordered the departure of nonessential personnel and their family members, citing the "security situation in Beirut."
