Despite preparations for the implementation of the U.S.-mediated framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, the Israeli army continued its operations in southern Lebanon on Saturday morning, following a night marked by airstrikes, drone attacks and demolition operations, according to our correspondent in the South.
An Israeli drone struck the outskirts of Kfar Tebnit (Nabatieh) twice late Saturday morning. Earlier, another drone dropped two stun bombs, one at the Mansouri intersection in the Sour district and another near Deir al-Mouallimine (the Teachers’ Training Center) in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. Israeli forces also carried out demolition operations between Arnoun and Kfar Tebnit (Nabatieh) and in the town of Houla (Marjayoun).
Overnight, demolition operations were also reported near Deir Seriane, in the Marjayoun district. Two stun bombs were dropped on Nabatieh el-Fawqa, while an Israeli airstrike hit the town’s Deir neighborhood with two missiles. Israeli forces also fired medium-caliber machine guns toward Zawtar al-Sharqieh.
The framework agreement calls for the establishment of pilot zones from which the Israeli army is to withdraw, allowing the Lebanese army to deploy and begin the disarmament of Hezbollah. Beirut has conditioned its participation in the next round of negotiations with Israel, scheduled for July 15-16 in Rome, on Israel’s withdrawal from the two pilot zones. According to an American official, the first phase of the pilot zone mechanism is expected to begin in the coming days.
