Army will not tolerate 'any harm to civil peace' after Hezbollah supporters protest Lebanon's agreement with Israel

BEIRUT — The Lebanese Army said Saturday evening that it would not tolerate "any harm to civil peace," as Hezbollah supporters continued to protest the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel announced Friday.

The demonstrations, particularly in Beirut and its southern suburbs on Friday night, were quickly dispersed by the army. On Saturday evening, troops also prevented protests and road closures in the Bekaa, according to our correspondent in the area.

In a brief statement, the army said Lebanon is facing "exceptional challenges" and called on citizens to "act responsibly" in response to calls for demonstrations in Beirut and other areas. It stressed the importance of "unity and solidarity in order to overcome the dangers threatening our country."

"The army command affirms that it will not tolerate any harm to security or civil peace through actions with unpredictable consequences, road blockages or damage to public and private property," the statement said.

The framework agreement signed in Washington provides, among other measures, for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from two "pilot zones" in occupied south Lebanon and their handover to the Lebanese Army.

Hezbollah has rejected the agreement, as it has consistently opposed direct negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv.
