BEIRUT — The parliamentary committee on human rights met Tuesday under the chairmanship of MP Michel Moussa, with Justice Minister Adel Nassar and a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in attendance. The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights had announced on June 10 the deployment of a mission to Lebanon to investigate violations of international law committed since the re-escalation of the war on March 2.

At the end of the session, Moussa said discussions focused on Israeli attacks against Lebanon, which he described as repeated violations of international humanitarian law affecting civilians and infrastructure. He questioned the "general silence" of the international community, "even though the countries that established the laws, conventions, and international standards should have condemned these violations." He specified that exchanges had taken place with the High Commissioner’s representative, particularly regarding mechanisms for documenting violations, reminding that the Lebanese government had requested the deployment of a United Nations fact-finding mission to Lebanon.

"This government initiative, limited to three months, is positive and important, but we are asking for more: that the government seek an inquiry commission and bring the matter before the International Criminal Court," declared MP Halima Kaakour, denouncing violations committed by "the Israeli enemy" over the past two years.

MP Melhem Khalaf, for his part, condemned "collective punishment," marked by forced displacement of populations and widespread destruction, describing a form of "urbicide" affecting both people and their cultural heritage, as well as the systematic destruction of towns and villages.
