The Lebanese-American Coordination Committee, a coalition of Lebanese-American organizations, on Tuesday praised "the role of U.S. President Donald Trump and his enlightened administration in supporting direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel aimed at resolving the outstanding disputes between the two countries."
"American sponsorship constitutes a fundamental guarantee for Lebanon to end the Israeli occupation of its land," the LACC said, adding its support for the Lebanese delegation conducting the negotiations in Washington and its "confidence in their patriotism."
A new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel is set to take place Tuesday in Washington. The implementation of a cease-fire between Hezbollah and Israel has been included in negotiations between Iran and the United States, despite Lebanese authorities' insistence on negotiating independently.
Lebanese officials believe direct negotiations with Israel are the only way to end the war that has raged since March 2, when Hezbollah opened fire on Israel in support of Iran, which gave Israel a pretext to kill more than 4,000 people in Lebanon.
"The state, represented by its official authorities, holds the exclusive right to decide matters of war and peace, and any military action taken outside of its authority is illegitimate," the LACC said.
The committee underscored "the need to provide local and international support for the decision by official authorities, represented by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, to condemn the actions of the Iranian regime and to oppose its malicious attempt to take Lebanon hostage."
