Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea received a delegation from the family of the late head of the municipality of Deir Mimas, Suhail Abu Jamra, in Maarab on Friday, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
The delegation included Abu Jomra's brother Simon, his wife May, and his children Nicole, Joe and Nicolas Abu Jamra. The meeting was also attended by Fadi Salameh, Geagea's envoy for affairs in the Marjayoun-Hasbaya region.
According to NNA, members of the family thanked Geagea for his condolences following Abu Jamra's death and "for sending a Lebanese Forces delegation to attend the funeral and offer support during the mourning period."
Abu Jamra was killed earlier in June in the southern village of Deir Mimas, in the Marjayoun district, while the village mokhtar was wounded in the same incident.
The Lebanese Army announced the day after the incident that it had arrested a suspect identified by his initials, F.B., alleging that he opened fire on Abu Jamra and the mokhtar. The army said a military unit intervened shortly after the shooting and apprehended the suspect during a raid. An investigation was launched under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities.
A source within the Internal Security Forces (ISF) previously told L'Orient Today that the suspect is an ISF member who was allegedly intoxicated and firing his weapon indiscriminately. According to the source, Abu Jamra and the mukhtar approached him in an attempt to calm the situation before both were shot.
The mokhtar was transferred to Rizk Hospital in Beirut for treatment following the incident. The investigation into the killing remains ongoing.
