BEIRUT — An incident with still unclear details broke out Thursday late afternoon in the Aisha Bakkar neighborhood of Beirut.

According to available information, young men close to a moukhtar (municipal official) allegedly attacked a Jamaa Islamiya office, a Sunni Islamist political party affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood movement. Since those involved were armed, press sources report three people were wounded, one of them critically, who is said to have succumbed to his injuries.

Some messages on social media indicate that the group opposing Jamaa Islamiya may be linked to the ''Resistance Brigades'' (pro-Hezbollah). Circulating videos show the scale of gunfire and panic in the streets before the Lebanese army was deployed in the area and restored calm.

Further indications were included in a statement published Thursday evening by the Future Movement, which mourned "victims" in the plural, suggesting more than one person may have been killed.

The Future Movement, part of the Hariri family, called for everyone to "prioritize rationality and dialogue," to refrain from "anything that can stir up discord and exacerbate tensions by threatening security and stability," and to "bring to justice all those responsible for this incident."
