BEIRUT — According to available information, young men close to a mokhtar (municipal official) allegedly attacked an al-Jamaa al-Islamiya office in Aisha Bakkar, in Beirut. Press sources report three people were wounded, one of them critically, who is said to have succumbed to his injuries.
Some messages on social media indicate that the attackers may be linked to the ''Resistance Brigades'' (pro-Hezbollah). Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya is an Islamist political party affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
Videos circulating on social media show the scale of gunfire and panic in the streets before the Lebanese Army was deployed in the area and restored calm.
In a statement, the army said the incident stemmed from “previous disputes” that escalated, leaving three people wounded, one of them seriously. It added that several arrests had been made and that weapons and ammunition had been seized.
The Future Movement called for everyone to "prioritize rationality and dialogue," to refrain from "anything that can stir up discord and exacerbate tensions by threatening security and stability," and to "bring to justice all those responsible for this incident."
