The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli soldiers killed a man Saturday in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank.
According to the ministry, Nour al-Din Kamal Hassan Fayyad, 34, was killed "by the occupation forces in the Jenin camp." The Palestinian Red Crescent said its teams in Jenin received the lifeless body of a man who had "been shot in the thigh." When asked for comment, the Israeli military did not immediately respond to AFP.
Israel launched a large-scale military operation in January in several Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank, saying it was targeting armed groups. The operation, dubbed "Iron Wall," targeted the Jenin and Tulkarem camps and displaced nearly 40,000 Palestinians, according to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
The Israeli military blocked access to the Jenin camp, allowing residents in only briefly to check on their homes and possessions.
Since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by Hamas' deadly attack on Israel in October 2023, near-daily violence has also occurred in the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967. According to an AFP tally based on data from the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 1,072 Palestinians, including many fighters, have been killed in the territory since October 2023 by Israeli soldiers or settlers.
At the same time, at least 46 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during military operations in the West Bank, according to official Israeli figures.
