'No concessions on Lebanon’s rights in talks with Israel,' Rai says from Baabda

BEIRUT — Head of the Maronite Church, Patriarch Bechara Rai, said in a speech at Baabda Palace that “The negotiations [with Israel] are free of any sacrifice or concession of Lebanon’s rights, and President [Joseph] Aoun does not accept this matter. Enough with destruction, devastation, and wars.”

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun said on Wednesday that Lebanon will seek a cease-fire extension in Washington on Thursday, during the second direct contact between Lebanon and Israel since 1983, once again at the level of their respective ambassadors to the United States.

“The April 17 speech is pivotal and restores dignity. It reflects the content of the presidential oath speech. Humanitarian corridors for those holding out in the southern villages are a right and an international duty, and the army commander is acting wisely and prudently and remains steadfast in his position, and he must be supported by everyone.”

In his first address since the truce, Aoun said on April 17 that negotiations with Israel are “not a sign of weakness,” but a step aimed at preserving Lebanon’s rights, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He stressed that Lebanon is “no longer an arena for others’ wars,” adding that the country is negotiating on its own terms. Aoun also said the Lebanese Army will play a central role in extending state authority across all territory, emphasizing that there will be no armed forces outside state institutions.

Rai insisted that Aoun "represents all Lebanese and speaks on behalf of all Lebanese, not as a Maronite. There must be no concession in negotiations on any matter or right concerning the Lebanese people. Lebanon wants peace, and negotiations are taking place with awareness and understanding.”

Aoun has taken charge of the negotiations dossier with Israel, drawing ire from Hezbollah circles. The cease-fire, which took effect on April 17 at midnight and was initially set for 10 days, is due to expire at midnight on Sunday.
