BEIRUT — The Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut, Archbishop Elias Audi, condemned in his Orthodox Easter homily on Sunday the indiscriminate Israeli bombings that killed more than 300 people last Wednesday in Lebanon, in a wave of about a hundred strikes carried out within minutes, including in areas where residents had not been warned.
“We must condemn the crimes and massacres committed by this enemy, especially those recently committed in Beirut. Civilians are always the victims. If war produces only death and destruction, while peace preserves life, sovereignty, and stability, why choose death over life?” the religious leader said.
The Israeli army said the strikes mainly targeted Hezbollah members and downplayed the civilian casualties, which have been condemned by most countries around the world.
