Israeli officials fear that U.S. President Donald Trump may announce a cease-fire with Iran this week, Israeli media Channel 12 and The New York Times (NYT) reported Wednesday.
The Israeli government is concerned that Trump could announce a cease-fire with Iran as early as this week, even before finalizing agreements with Tehran regarding Washington’s 15-point proposal to end the war, according to Channel 12, citing senior Israeli officials. NYT also reported this information, citing two anonymous Israeli officials.
In response, Israel’s political and security leadership has drawn up a plan over the past 24 hours prioritizing targets in Iran in order to achieve "maximum results" ahead of a possible U.S. initiative to end the fighting, Channel 12 reported.
NYT sources said that on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered that all efforts be made in the next 48 hours to destroy as much of Iran’s weapons industry as possible, according to two official sources.
The United States and Israel launched the war against Iran on Feb. 28. The American president proposed a 15-point peace plan to Iran, which in turn requested control over the Strait of Hormuz, the collection of taxes, and a halt to Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, among other things.
