Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his best wishes to Iran’s leaders and people for the Persian New Year, Nowruz, and assured them of Moscow’s support amid the war sparked by Israeli-American strikes.

“Congratulations on the occasion of Nowruz … were sent to Iran’s leaders, to the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, and to the country’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

“Vladimir Putin wished the people of Iran the strength to withstand difficult trials with dignity and emphasized that, in these difficult times, Moscow remains a loyal friend and reliable partner to Tehran,” the statement said.

A longtime ally of Iran, Russia has condemned the strikes on the country carried out since late February by Israel and the United States. This week, it denounced the death of Iranian national security chief Ali Larijani, killed in a strike claimed by Israel.

Moscow has not officially announced any concrete aid to its ally since the start of the conflict, apart from humanitarian assistance. However, several U.S. media outlets have reported that Moscow may have shared military intelligence with Tehran for its strikes in the Middle East.

In response to large-scale strikes by the United States and Israel, Tehran has attacked U.S. bases in several Gulf countries. On March 10, the Kremlin declined to comment on the alleged intelligence-sharing with Iran.
