Thousands of people have been killed across the Middle East since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28 and Tehran retaliated with strikes against Israel, U.S. bases in the region, and Gulf states. Here are the death tolls by country, as recorded on Friday, March 20, which Reuters was not able to independently verify.
Iran
The U.S.-based human rights organization HRANA said Thursday, March 19, that 3,186 people had been killed in Iran since the start of the war, specifying that 1,394 of them were civilians, including at least 210 children. The group states that its data comes from field reports, local contacts, medical and emergency sources, civil society networks, open sources, and official statements.
The latest figures communicated by state media, for their part, report 1,270 deaths. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said March 6 that at least 1,332 people had been killed since the beginning of the war. No explanation was given for the discrepancy. It is unclear whether these numbers include the 104 people reportedly killed in a U.S. attack on an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka on March 4.
Lebanon
At least 1,021 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since March 2, according to Lebanese authorities. The World Health Organization and Lebanese health authorities said more than 100 of the victims were children.
Iraq
At least 60 people have been killed, according to Iraqi authorities. Most of them were members of the Popular Mobilization Forces. One foreign crew member was killed during an attack on oil tankers near an Iraqi port, according to port security officials.
Israel
15 civilians have been killed, including nine people in an Iranian missile strike on Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem, on March 1, according to ambulance services. The Israeli military said two of its soldiers also died in southern Lebanon. In addition, four Palestinian women were killed in an Iranian missile strike in the occupied West Bank.
