Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced Thursday that he will not host visitors this year for the Eid al-Fitr holiday, scheduled for Friday and which marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, "in light of the current circumstances resulting from the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon."
"This year, Fitr is tainted by the blood of children, women and innocents targeted by the Israeli war machine," Berri said. He also recalled that "more than a million Lebanese have been unjustly displaced from their homes, villages, and towns." "To the displaced who are resisting, to the hosts ... we are called to seek unity, solidarity, and cohesion, because that is the path to salvation and the preservation of Lebanon," he added.
According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, 968 people have been killed since the beginning of the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2, including 116 children and 40 healthcare workers. Authorities have counted 2,432 wounded. More than one million people are registered as displaced.
