SOUTH LEBANON — Five people were killed and seven others injured Friday in an Israeli strike on a Makassed building, a Sunni non-profit organization, in Saida, the largest city in southern Lebanon, according to the Health Ministry.
The bombing targeted an apartment in this building around 11:15 a.m. and caused an explosion that shook the city, our local correspondent reports.
On site, a shopkeeper working near the bombed location told our correspondent that "the explosion was sudden and very violent."
"Stones were flying, windows shattered and smoke quickly rose around the site. Human remains fell from the sky," he recounted.
The targeted building is located near the sharia court and the seaside Corniche.
In a statement, thethe Sunni non-profit Makassed, in Saida condemned the strike, saying it "blatantly violates the most basic humanitarian and legal standards."
The group confirmed that Israel had targeted "the organization’s main offices, as well as engineers' and lawyers' offices, medical clinics and a Lebanese Red Cross center," meaning only "civilian entities."
The bombed building "contains no military or partisan facility and is used exclusively for civilian, professional and humanitarian services," the organization stressed.
