BEIRUT — Since the start of the Hezbollah-Israel escalation, Damascus has reportedly been concerned that Hezbollah might launch attacks from Syrian territory and is said to have ordered its commanders to prevent such operations, Israel’s public broadcaster Kan11 reported Friday.
Citing “Arab intelligence sources,” the Israeli media outlet said Hezbollah is seeking to attack Israel from Syria in parallel with its strikes from Lebanon.
In this context, in recent days, the Syrian government has “given orders to its commanders on the ground” to take measures to prevent any operations against Israel.
Roadblocks have reportedly been set up, particularly in southern Syria. The report comes two weeks after the same Israeli broadcaster said Damascus was working to dismantle Hezbollah “infrastructure” on the Syrian side of the border. It also reported that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was considering strikes on Hezbollah positions on the Lebanese side, in the Bekaa Valley
After the start of the war in the Middle East, thousands of Syrian soldiers were deployed to the border with Lebanon.
Since the fall of the Assad regime (major Hezbollah ally) on Dec. 8, 2024, and the rise to power of Sharaa, who led a coalition of rebel jihadist groups that overthrew the former regime, tensions have remained high along the border, between residents of pro-Hezbollah villages and Syrian security forces.
Several episodes of clashes have broken out between Shiite clans and the Syrian army during 2025, while Syrian security forces have regularly announced weapons seizures intended for Hezbollah.
However, Sharaa claimed to have made “concessions” regarding the injuries inflicted by Hezbollah during the war in Syria, where Hezbollah fought alongside the Assad regime.
