France's chief of staff of the armed forces, General Fabien Mandon, arrived in Beirut on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. local time.
After landing, he met with President Joseph Aoun as well as the army's commander-in-chief, Rodolph Haykal, at Baabda Palace, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.
The French army chief was "sent by President Emmanuel Macron to assess the situation in Lebanon amid the evolving security context,” Baabda said. Aoun thanked his French counterpart for this initiative.
This visit comes on the day the international conference to support the Lebanese Armed Forces was originally scheduled in Paris, before being postponed due to the escalation in Lebanon that began on Monday.
