Researcher Salma Merchak Slim, mother of the prominent researcher and well-known Hezbollah opponent Lokman Slim, who was assassinated in 2021, has passed away, announced his widow, Monika Borgmann.
The funeral for Salma Merchak will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at the National Evangelical Church of Beirut, opposite the Grand Serail.
At Lokman Slim’s funeral, Merchak, an Egyptian, called on young Lebanese people to “live according to the principles” her son advocated.
She urged them to prioritize “dialogue and reason,” which would allow them to “build a nation,” and to “continue the fight” her son led for the country, while urging them to abandon “the logic of weapons, which has brought the country no benefit.”
Lokman Slim was found dead on Feb. 4, 2021, in southern Lebanon, after being reported missing the previous evening when he left a friend’s home in the village of Niha.
His body, which had been shot several times, was found in a rental car near the town of Tuffahta, in the Zahrani district. The victim was regularly targeted with threats from supporters of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement, but refused to give in and continued living in Beirut’s southern suburb.
