Army Commander Rodolph Haykal met on Wednesday in Yarze with the ambassadors to Lebanon from the "Quintet" countries — the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar — which are involved in Lebanese affairs.

The meeting focused on the upcoming international conference in support of the Lebanese Army, scheduled for March 5 in Paris, according to a post on the Lebanese Army's X account.

Discussions also covered the preparatory meeting for the conference, which is set to be held in Cairo, Egypt, on Feb. 24. Haykal had earlier been received by President Joseph Aoun.

The Lebanese Army is at the center of attention, both domestically and internationally, because of the role it is expected to play in disarming militias — specifically Hezbollah, which has been significantly weakened after its most recent conflict with Israel from 2023 to 2024.

This mission is the subject of two Lebanese government decisions made last August.

According to its reports, the army has already taken control of the area south of the Litani River and is just beginning the second phase of its plan to exercise a monopoly on weapons.

On Monday, at a Cabinet meeting, Haykal set a timeframe of four to eight months to disarm Hezbollah in the region between the Litani and Awali Rivers.

The party has refused to give up its weapons nationwide and maintains that disarmament concerns only the area south of the Litani.
