Relatives of Ahmad Shukur, a former captain at General Security who was disappeared in mid-December and whose abduction has reportedly been attributed to Mossad, were received Monday by Mazen Chakoura, the regional representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. They handed him a detailed document requesting to know Shukur’s fate and to ensure his safety, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

The delegation was made up of Rana and Hassan Shukur, Chahinaz Ghayad, and Mohammad Safa, director of the Khiam Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture. The U.N. representative said he "understood the case and the family’s suffering" and pledged to "forward the request to the relevant authorities and to follow up on the case in accordance with current procedures."

The memorandum given to Chakoura details the circumstances of Ahmad Ali Shukur’s abduction. According to his family, it is a case of "arbitrary detention" and "forced disappearance." The document also denounces "serious violations of fundamental rights guaranteed by international human rights law and international humanitarian law."

It specifically calls for "the immediate disclosure of the fate and place of detention of Ahmad Shukur, ensuring his physical and psychological well-being, enabling his family to communicate with him, permitting visits by a neutral international organization, and providing all legal and humanitarian guarantees for his release."

In early January, his relatives had already organized a sit-in in Nabi Sheet, in the Bekaa, to denounce the "silence" of Lebanese authorities regarding this case. Several dozen people, including former ministers, took part in the gathering, during which speeches called on President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to clarify the fate of the missing veteran.
