EARTHQUAKE

Magnitude 3.1 earthquake in Syria felt in Lebanon

The National Center for Geophysics in Bhannes, part of the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS), reported on Monday that an earthquake in Syria was also felt in Lebanon.

“At 5:39 p.m. local time on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Serghaya region of Syria. It was felt by several residents,” the Center said in a statement.

The previous night, another earthquake of magnitude 2.6 was recorded at 12:28 a.m. in Sohmor, in the western Bekaa.

A week ago, a seismic tremor of magnitude 2.4 was recorded in Lebanon at 11:55 p.m., with its epicenter located in western Bekaa.

Several seismic events have occurred this month. On Jan. 18, a magnitude 3.5 tremor occurred off northern Lebanon. A week earlier, on the night of Jan. 10, a series of low-intensity tremors were felt by residents for about ten seconds. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), it was a magnitude 4.1 earthquake, with an epicenter about 60 kilometers offshore from Beirut, at a depth of roughly ten kilometers. The tremor caused no damage and was also felt in Syria and Israel.

In an interview with the press, Marlène Brax, director of the National Center for Geophysics, explained that these events are part of the natural seismic activity of the eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing that “there are currently no concerning signs.”
