A protester was arrested after climbing onto the roof of the Iranian Embassy in London and removing a flag, police said on Friday evening.
“During the demonstration that took place this evening outside the Iranian Embassy, a protester illegally entered private property, climbing several balconies to reach the embassy roof, where he removed a flag,” police said on social media platform X.
On Jan. 10, another man briefly replaced the embassy’s flag with the one used before Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Friday’s protest was also marked by objects being thrown at police, with “several officers injured,” according to police, who reported “a number” of arrests.
Last week, police announced the deployment of additional officers to “prevent any unrest” and protect the embassy, which is located next to Hyde Park.
Since Dec. 28, Iran has been rocked by a major protest movement, whose crackdown has left at least 3,428 people dead, according to Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR). Demonstrations are regularly held in the UK and other countries to denounce the crackdown and demand an end to Iran’s theocratic regime.
