The Mexican director is reinventing genre cinema by making creatures a mirror of our fears, desires and the stories that shape us. He spoke to L'Orient-Le Jour in Marrakesh.

“My childhood dream was to belong to the monsters.” This line, from Guillermo del Toro, captures the core of his filmmaking. The Mexican director, known for weaving folklore, faith and the fantastical into his work, was honored at the Marrakesh International Film Festival, where he presented Frankenstein.The film, adapted from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is also on Netflix and stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz. Del Toro says he conceived it as an opera.Del Toro grew up with what he calls “the fear of being born” and an early, intense relationship with religion.
