On Friday, Israel rejected the arrest warrants for “genocide” issued by Istanbul’s public prosecutor against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other ministers in connection with the Gaza war, calling them a “publicity stunt” by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Israel firmly and contemptuously rejects the latest publicity stunt of tyrant Erdoğan,” wrote Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in an English-language post on X.
“In Erdogan’s Turkey, the judicial system has long been used as a tool to silence political rivals and detain journalists, judges and mayors,” Saar added, referring in particular to Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and Erdogan’s rival, who has been imprisoned since March and faces numerous legal prosecutions.
