Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris’s release doesn’t end Iran’s hostage diplomacy
The two French nationals are now on conditional release, still in Tehran. We conduct a short interview with Clement Therme, researcher at the French Institute of International Relations.

Detained for more than three years in Iran, much of it in Evin prison in Tehran, the French citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris were released on conditional terms on Tuesday, Nov. 4. They are currently at the French Embassy in the Iranian capital, where they are awaiting permission to leave the territory of the Islamic Republic. The couple, both unionized teachers, had been arrested in May 2022 after meeting with Iranian teachers om strike, before being accused of espionage. Their release comes amid heightened tensions, including the reimposition of sanctions against Iran and pressure from Donald Trump's United States to reach a nuclear agreement before the end of the year.
