BEIRUT —Egypt’s ambassador to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa, said Friday that President Joseph Aoun is adopting a “realistic approach” to the question of state control over arms, expressing hope for an agreement shaped by a Lebanese vision to be reached within hours.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with Aoun at the presidential palace in Baabda, Egypt’s Moussa, reiterated Cairo’s full support. “Egypt recognizes the president’s role and is doing its best to assist him,” Moussa said, calling for the restoration of stability and security in Lebanon and the wider region.
“I discussed the issue of arms control with the president, and he has a realistic approach,” he added. “We hope to see an agreement in the next few hours that reflects the Lebanese state's vision. The signals are positive, but many details still need to be worked out. The state is aware of this.”
Lebanon is currently reviewing a U.S. proposal developed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and presented to Beirut in June. The plan sets out specific goals and a timeline for Hezbollah’s disarmament, while offering economic support to revive the country’s economy. Hezbollah’s official response is expected soon.
The Lebanese government is seeking to restore its monopoly on weapons through a dialogue initiated from Baabda with Hezbollah. However, other Lebanese political factions, along with Western powers and Israel, are pushing for a clear and binding disarmament timeline.
Hezbollah and Israel fought a devastating war from October 2023 to November 2024, in the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, which significantly weakened the Shiite group.
Commenting on the recent escalation between Israel and Iran, Moussa noted rising regional tensions. “We’re trying to close the fronts, but others reopen just as quickly. The root of the problem must be addressed to prevent further flare-ups, especially around Gaza,” he warned.
