BEIRUT — Georges Brax, the spokesperson for the gas station owners' syndicate, was elected president of the syndicate, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The positions of president of the syndicate and his deputy have been vacant for four years and four months since their previous holders passed away.
The previous president was Sami Brax, Georges' father, who died in February 2021 from complications due to COVID-19.
According to the statement, the Syndicate of Gas Station Owners elected on June 19 a new administrative body (Executive Council) comprising 12 members in a move that "restored regularity to the union work in the sector after a long absence."
In this context, the new administrative body held its first meeting on Tuesday afternoon at its permanent headquarters in Adlieh (Beirut) under the chairmanship of the new president, and the presence of Vice-President Fadi Abu Shakra, among other members of the syndicate.
In his intervention, Brax stressed that the work in the next phase is to transform the Syndicate into a "modern and active institution," and asked everyone to "prepare for an organizational, administrative and technical renaissance."
After discussions that addressed the concerns and worries of workers in the sector, the participants of the meeting decided to resort to steps leading to the revival of union work in cooperation with other unions, fuel import companies, authorities, ministries and public institutions concerned with its affairs, especially the ministries of energy, economy, labor, interior and parliamentary committees.
