BEIRUT — A delegation from the Shiite Amal movement, led by the vice-president of the political bureau, Sheikh Hassan al-Masri, visited Sheikh Yasser Audeh on Friday to denounce the assault he suffered on Tuesday in Haret Hreik, in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Sheikh Audeh, a Shiite figure critical of Hezbollah, was beaten on Tuesday by the brother of a mukhtar close to the Shiite party as he was leaving a religious service. His attacker was then joined by the mukhtar (public officer) and other individuals who accused him of insulting the former Hezbollah secretary-general assassinated by Israel, Hassan Nasrallah, according to the victim's son, who denied any provocation from his father.

A Hezbollah source, contacted by L'Orient Today, quickly condemned the assault, distancing themselves from the attackers. Shortly thereafter, more than 160 Lebanese figures denounced the attack on the religious leader, calling it an “intimidation attempt.”

In this context, the visit of the Amal delegation, a close ally of Hezbollah, appears symbolic. Its members strongly denounced the violence that Sheikh Audeh was subjected to, calling for “the perpetrators to be held accountable for this unacceptable assault.”

Sheikh Audeh, for his part, thanked the members of the delegation for their gesture and the Amal movement for “its support of [my] person during this ordeal.”
