U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that trade negotiations with China were "a bit of an impasse" and suggested that the U.S. president and his Chinese counterpart might take part in them.

"I would say they are a bit of an impasse," Bessent told Fox News, which asked him about ongoing trade negotiations with China.

"I think we will have more discussions with them in the coming weeks, and I think there could, at some point, be a call between the president [Donald Trump, editor's note] and President [...] Xi" Jinping, he added.

The two world powers agreed in May to suspend for 90 days the tariffs they were imposing on each other, a surprising de-escalation in the midst of a trade war achieved after talks in Geneva. As part of this trade truce, Washington and Beijing agreed to reduce their tariffs from 145% to 30% on Chinese goods and from 125% to 10% on American products, respectively.
