State Security announced Wednesday in a statement that it launched an investigation with two officials at the Beirut port after the "disappearance" of the sum of $42,000 from the port's safes.
After being questioned, the officials admitted that the amount assigned as "collected rents" according to the statement was lost and assumed responsibility for this incident. The two officials were referred to the judiciary and ordered to return the missing sum, as stated by State Security.
The port's management was unable to provide information on the matter when contacted.
The Beirut port was the scene of a deadly double explosion on Aug. 4, 2020, caused by the storage of ammonium nitrate on site for years. These explosions killed more than 200 people and injured nearly 6,500.
