Baghdad sues autonomous Kurdistan for gas contracts with US companies

The federal authorities of Iraq have filed a complaint against autonomous Kurdistan for signing, without its consent, hydrocarbon contracts with two U.S. companies, two officials told AFP on Tuesday.

This can be seen as a new illustration of the tensions between Baghdad and the Kurds over the exploitation of oil and gas resources.

These two agreements, with a combined value of several tens of billions of dollars, were signed on May 19 in Washington by the Kurdistan government. An Iraqi government official confirmed to AFP that a complaint had been filed "before the commercial court of al-Karkh" in Baghdad. A Kurdistan official confirmed that the complaint demanded "the annulment of the contracts."
