The Syrian presidency announced on Saturday the creation of a national commission for transitional justice, tasked with shedding light on the crimes of the former dictator’s regime — more than five months after its fall and after over a decade of war.

According to a decree signed by interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, the body is responsible for “uncovering the truth about the serious violations committed by the former regime,” holding those responsible to account “in coordination with the relevant authorities,” compensating victims for the harm they suffered, and firmly establishing the principles of non-repetition of such crimes and national reconciliation.
