"Two young girls" were arrested in Sour after the public prosecutor at the South Lebanon Appeals Court, Rahif Ramadan, gave instructions to "combat the phenomenon of prostitution," the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Monday.

According to NNA, the prosecutor held talks with a non-governmental organization that presented evidence of the "spread" of prostitution in the region. He then gave instructions to combat this phenomenon, particularly along the Sour corniche.

In a crisis-hit Lebanon, prostitution has increased again after being heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the collapse of the currency. However, covert prostitution is prohibited by Lebanese law. According to Article 523 of the penal code, "any person who practices or facilitates secret prostitution is sentenced" to a prison term of one to three years and a fine of two to four times the minimum wage.
