BEIRUT — Three ministers from Nawaf Salam's new government conducted a tour on Saturday at Beirut's international airport with the purpose of acquainting themselves with the logistical and security procedures in place.
This visit by Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar, Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny, and Finance Minister Yassine Jaber, who Customs is dependent on, took place as airport security forces seized $2.5 million in cash at the airport on Friday, which was reportedly intended for Hezbollah, according to three sources cited by Reuters.
The money was being carried by a man arriving from Turkey. According to the official National News Agency (NNA), Ministers Hajjar, Rasamny, and Jaber met inside the airport with Airport Security Commander General Fadi Kfoury, Civil Aviation Director Fadi al-Hassan, and Head of the Internal Security Forces (ISF) Inspection Services Ezzat Khatib.
Participants in the meeting notably discussed the airport administration's needs to facilitate visitor flow as well as strategies for strengthening security infrastructure, particularly luggage scanners and freight.
Israel has accused Hezbollah of using Lebanon's only airport to receive weapons and money from Iran, especially on civilian flights, accusations that prompted Lebanese authorities to indefinitely suspend flights to and from Iran. These bans led to protests by Hezbollah supporters, who blocked the road to the airport, which is located in the southern suburbs of the capital.
